Welcome to another edition of Roland Butcher Design’s newsletter. Much has happened since the last one… a new baby girl (Eden), a new studio and plenty of new projects. This time we are featuring Marq Wines (Winner of the PICA Print Awards and finalist at the AGDA Awards), an enterprising Mark Kern and his business Kern Health, the vibrant place-to-be AIR Nightclub, and spotlighting tanGO, an innovative West Australian beauty product taking the tanning world by storm! Don’t forget to answer our “Who Said That?” question at the end of the newsletter for your chance to win a tanGO pack!
Marq Wines
Mark Warren the winemaker behind Marq Wines, is an accomplished wine maker and has created an artistic range of wines, produced in small quantity at his boutique winery. Mark’s current major commercial role is producing the extensive Happs range as well as wines under contract for several other Margaret River wine brands. When all of this is added up, he is responsible for 60 to 70 individual wines each year, now including wines of his own under the Marq Wines label.

When Mark contacted RBD for the branding of his own winery, he had a very clear brief for his new venture. As Marq Wines features a range of contemporary and emerging wine varietals, Mark wanted a label with a contemporary approach to reflect that. Clear varnish and foil print embellishments were used to counter-point the minimalist approach to typography and colour. The Marq Wine label stands out with its understated elegance and reflects the new and exciting way Warren is directing and educating our palates.

“A quick look at the list of Vermentino, Fiano, Wild & Worked Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Wild Ferment Chardonnay, Rose, Gamay, Tempranillo, Malbec, and Cut & Dry Shiraz (Amarone style) points to the underlying philosophy: an exploration of the potential of alternative varieties and unusual winemaking methods by someone with an undoubted technical understanding of the processes involved.” James Halliday (

Marq Wines Labels won the Print Industry Craftsmanship Awards and was Highly Commended at the last AGDA Awards in Melbourne.

Air Nightclub - Northbridge
AIR nightclub is a complete rebuild and refit project, developed to provide a first class, luxurious venue for clientele looking for a sophisticated nightclub experience.

“I had a lot of fun with this project,”
said Roland. “The strategy was to create a fantasy experience, where clubbers are transported into a futuristic transit lounge, where outstanding in-flight entertainment is delivered surrounded by state of the art technology.”

“The Air theme worked across all aspects, from the airlock hatchway entry door, to the “cabin crew” staff uniforms and boarding pass style tickets for special events. The simplicity of the Air logo is modern and stylish, whilst having the trade-mark quirkiness of Roland’s designs, where the logo can be read equally upside-down.

The Air Branding was a finalist in the AGDA awards and received a Highly Commendable Award.

STAR PROFILE: Jodi Colcott and tanGO

RBD: tanGO is an innovative product. What compelled you to design your own product?
JC: As the owner of a tanning salon I noticed there was a big gap in the market for tan removal products. We had clients coming in for their treatments unprepared and we had no retail products for them to take home. It was a big gamble to take an idea and turn it into a reality, however it has definitely paid off. It is flattering to me that many of the large tanning companies have to some degree now imitated my idea.

RBD: So you began with a tanning removal cloth. What other range of products do you offer now?
JC: After the tanGO tan removal cloth was established I branched out into a removal glove as the market was demanding it. We then have continued the line with a tan applicator mitt, and an exfoliating glove for the serious tanner. The basic concept behind tanGO was to provide a gentle reusable product that removed self tan effectively. Quite often people will ask me why do you want to take the tan off. If you have ever seen a bad tan or an orange tan trust me those girls want it gone. Sadly a lot of my clientele were using bleach and nail polish remover to try and achieve this result.

I also supply a range of disposable accessories to salons which has developed into a successful online business.

RBD: Today’s retail industry is suffering with on-line purchases. Have you had to change to adapt to this market?
JC: We have had a strong online store & presence since the inception of this company & concept, at . We do however still have representatives out on the road visiting stores; I believe good old fashion customer service, education and training will always be appreciated.

RBD: You are newly wed and have two incredible boys, aged 14 and 11. How do you balance it all?
JC: I try hard to have a no business calls or emails rule after 3pm so I can give my children and husband quality time. I also believe in having a very organized work space/life to help keep everything running smoothly.

RBD: Favorite tanning product?
JC: I love tanGO obviously for all my removal products however I am a big fan of bronzing products as a bronzer has the ability to make everything look great! I personally don’t think you can go past M.A.C. Cosmetics for a good quality bronzer. I believe being bronzed is here to stay and faking it will always be the best option. Choose your technician with care. If you decide to do it yourself take your time, and remember that preparation is the key to a flawless tan!

Workscreen Medical
When RBD first met Mark Kern in 2010, he was a physiotherapist and feldenkrais practitioner who had a few big ideas. Since Mark’s conception of his business Workscreen Medical and now the larger umbrella of Kern Health, Mark’s business has grown and branched out into two niche areas in work related health matters.

“When I first started out with Workscreen, Roland was an enormous help. His knowledge about marketing was essential. Roland helped me focus on things I hadn't even considered,” Mark said. “The branding of Workscreen has been great and other professionals and peers have had many positive comments about it. It enabled me to launch into a new business with confidence.”

“Workscreen offers a health screening service for potential employees to ensure a full understanding of a person’s health history. In that sense, the service provides the missing pieces of the jigsaw,” said Roland.

Workscreen now provides services for small and large companies, such as Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group and Domain. Kern Health marries nicely with Workscreen providing appraisals of businesses to reduce work injuries, assistance in finding ideal team members and ensuring best practices for a safe and efficient work place.
“Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”

Check out our new website at Tailored by Tall Traffic, we trust you find the site easy to use and we appreciate any feedback to help us improve our service. We are working on a segment containing “Pre-fab design” ideas. This takes the unknown out of the design process, and uniquely presents an opportunity to “see what you pay for” before committing to a design. We’re not advocating this approach to every design, but some of these would be a good fit for certain market sectors. Newsletters like this one can also be downloaded from our website, and we hope you have fun browsing some of Roland’s projects; some of the golden oldies, as well as our terrific new designs. Happy Surfing!

Our next edition will be coming out in December. In time for Christmas and the holiday celebrations, our focus will be on our clients with wineries and the designs within the wine industry Roland has been busy creating over the last year. Also, another chance to solve the Quote of the Quarter and win yourself another bottle of wine! Mmmmmm….
